The 2024 cohort of TED Fellows is simply astounding. From a medical mythbuster to a wildland firefighter to a photojournalist documenting life in Russian-occupied Georgia, they are 11 individuals whose work spans as many countries and touches thousands of lives. Already, the program is helping them evolve and grow.

For the past 15 years, the TED Fellows program has been committed to finding and supporting the next generation of emerging leaders who are pushing the boundaries in their fields and working to solve their communities’ greatest challenges. By providing them with communications training, network-building, professional coaching and more, we help amplify their ideas and build their influence, nurturing them toward lasting impact over the course of their career. Our new TED Fellows join a unique community of more than 500 bold thinkers who are taking on climate change, inequality, global medical crises, injustice and so much more.

Here’s a snapshot of all this community has achieved in 2024.

Once a Fellow, always a Fellow

What benefits do TED Fellows receive? We provide:

Coaching

Our program prepares TED Fellows to take the global stage. Through workshops, communications training and one-on-one mentoring, our 2024 Fellows honed their skills in public speaking, media relations and leadership.

Content

This year we rolled out TED Fellows Films, a short-form documentary series featuring each of our 2024 Fellows, and shared them as TED Talks of the Day (with 10.9M monthly downloads), amplifying their remarkable work.

Community

Year after year, Fellows say that the deep sense of belonging within a vibrant, motivated, global community is the program’s most valuable offering. Our 2024 Fellows echoed this sentiment.

Connection

Over the course of the year, we integrated our 2024 Fellows into the wider TED community too, connecting them with opportunities as well as organizations with potential to support their work.

TED Fellows don’t just meet — they team up and collaborate, for bigger impact.

Explore the web of Fellows connections

This year, we sought to tangibly measure the sense of community that Fellows always tell us about, by asking in our annual survey for Fellows to list all the others with whom they’ve meaningfully collaborated. What we found was striking. The data revealed a rich network that cuts across regions, disciplines and cohorts — with 99% of the network connected and the average number of collaborations standing at 7 per Fellow. We plan to support these collaborations even more actively in 2025, by focusing on community-building.

Anjan Sundaram

Peace Activist

Just months after October 7, Palestinian entrepreneur Aziz Abu Sarah sat down with Israeli peacemaker Maoz Inon at TED2024 for a powerful conversation on peace, one which highlighted their shared experiences. It has since become the third most watched TED Talk of 2024, with over 2 million views and listens. As a result, Aziz and Maoz were invited to Verona, Italy, to speak with Pope Francis in front of a crowd of 13,000 people. Afterwards, Pope Francis tweeted, “Peace will never grow out of mistrust, walls or weapons pointed at each other.

Farwiza Farhan

Conservationist

Farwiza Farhan has dedicated her life to protecting Indonesia’s lush tropical rainforests, especially the Leuser Ecosystem in Sumatra — the last place on earth where the Sumatran rhino, tiger, elephant and orangutan roam together in the wild. Becoming a TED Fellow in 2021, she says, has greatly amplified the visibility of her work. That year, a TEDster nominated her for the Pritzker Genius award; in 2022, she was named to the TIME100 Next list; and this year, she received the Ramon Magsaysay Award, known as “Asia’s Nobel Prize.” All helping her mission to make the Leuser rainforest as well known as the Amazon or Congo Basin.

Laura Indolfi

Laura Indolfi

Biomedical Entrepreneur

Laura Indolfi has dedicated her career to an ambitious goal: making pancreatic cancer a curable disease. As the cofounder and CEO of PanTher Therapeutics, she’s transforming the way we treat this devastating disease, by delivering high-dose treatment directly to the tumor site, instead of traditional chemotherapy — maximizing effectiveness while minimizing harm. Laura says receiving the TED Fellowship early in PanTher’s journey amplified their work on a global scale, putting their innovations in front of an influential audience. In August, PanTher reached a major milestone with FDA approval to proceed on a study of their lead product. With this clearance, PanTher is one step closer to realizing its vision.

Usman Riaz

Pakistan

Usman Riaz

Artist/Filmmaker/Composer

At just 21, Usman Riaz played TEDGlobal 2012, showing how he mastered his unique guitar style by learning on the internet. The platform paved the way for his next endeavor: cofounding Mano Animation Studios. Usman has spent more than a decade making The Glassworker, a hand-drawn animated film exploring themes of love, war and art. The film premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this year, and has been selected as Pakistan’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. At the Night of the Fellows cabaret event at TED2024, he credited the TED Fellows program with giving him the grit and support to finish this passion project.

Joshua Roman

Joshua Roman

Cellist

Joshua Roman’s path took an unexpected turn when long COVID nearly ended his music career. But as he explained in a recent feature in The New York Times, his resilience brought him back, with a sold-out Well-Being Concert at Carnegie Hall last December and the launch of his new album, Immunity, this year — a blend of performance and storytelling that explores the impact of his illness. Joshua gave a once-in-a-lifetime cello performance and personal talk at the first Night of the Fellows at TED2024 and has been continuing his comeback tour throughout the year.

Anjan Sundaram

India + Mexico

Anjan Sundaram

War Reporter

At TED2024, journalist Anjan Sundaram delivered a powerful talk on his environmental war reporting, highlighting the critical role of Indigenous communities — which despite representing only 5% of the global population, protect 80% of Earth's remaining biodiversity. The talk sparked conversations about the importance of journalism in surfacing this kind of untold story, and an attendee was so inspired, they funded Sundaram in starting the Stringer Foundation, an initiative supporting courageous social justice journalists worldwide. His vision: to make this the "Nobel Prize for journalism."

Fellows Films

In 2024, we premiered 11 TED Fellows Films, a mix of a TED Talk and a short-form documentary.

The first batch featured our 2024 cohort, a dynamic group of visionaries who are tackling big challenges — from reimagining healthcare in conflict zones to advancing safer AI technologies.

A year of new energy and unthinkable impact

2024 was a big year for our program. Looking ahead to 2025, we’re poised for even more transformative change.

After taking last year to reflect and re-imagine, this year the TED Fellows program resurfaced with new energy, excitement and purpose. This has been a year of many firsts for us:

  • We piloted Fellows Fest at TEDNext, bringing together Fellows from our program along with fellows from other organizations to share stories and challenges.
  • We premiered multiple new formats of TED content: our TED Fellows Films, an unscripted conversation on the TEDNext Stage, and the Night of the Fellows cabaret evening at TED2024.
  • We launched small community quarterly grants, to support Fellows in coming together more often for peer support and collaboration.
  • We expanded our reach in Latin America, Southwest Asia and North Africa by increasing our nominator and applicant pools in these regions.
  • We created a new way to measure the breadth and depth of meaningful collaborations in our network, which we hope might shift the way people think about the value of relationships.

TED Fellows remind us daily that there are amazing people doing incredible work in their communities and the world. I hope this community serves as a source of inspiration for you, as it does for me. I invite you to follow @tedfellow on Instagram and join our newsletter to hear the Fellows’ stories, support their work and experience this unique community of innovators.

With hope,

Headshot of Lily James Olds, Director of TED Fellows.
